Tankless systems heat your water on demand using electric coils or gas.  The main difference is these systems don't require a storage tank to keep water hot all the time.  One of the benefits of a tankless water heater systems is it works on demand, but there is limitations on the output and flow rate of the system.  These limitations could become an issue if you are running multiple sources of hot water at one time, because your heater might not be able to keep up with the demand of hot water.  The flow rate for tankless water heaters is measured in gallons per minute of hot water the machine can produce. These systems come in gas or electric options but gas usually is able to heat the water faster than electric.

Storage tank hot water heaters will typically hold between 20 & 80 gallons of water in the tank. These systems keep water hot in the tank at all times, so one of the negatives is the energy use of these systems is larger than a tankless system.  Another drawback is the tanks are fairly large which require more space than a tankless system.  On a plus side your water will remain hot as long as you don't deplete the storage tank.  If you do deplete the tank then you will need wait until the water heater is able to heat up the cold water sufficiently.  These systems come in gas or electric options but gas usually is able to heat the water faster than electric.

A hot water recirculation pump system was created to provide hot water to each of your hot water taps almost instantly.  Our clients love the fact that when they turn on the hot water it comes out immediately and they don't have to stand and wait for the the shower or faucet water to warm up.  The pumps generally use electricity but the cost is usually offset because these recirculating pump systems can save between 10,000 and15,000 gallons of water each year.  This system keeps you from watching your water and your money go down the drain waiting for hot water to move from the water heater to the fixture.
