At Colorado Green Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, we believe homeowners deserve clear, honest information, especially when it comes to changes that affect your comfort and your budget.

Starting January 1, 2026, Colorado has updated its rules for new gas furnaces and gas water heaters sold in the state. While you may have heard some confusing or concerning headlines, the good news is:

👉 If your current system is working, you do NOT need to replace it.

What This Means for Homeowners

  • No rush, no pressure:
The new law does not require homeowners to upgrade or remove existing furnaces or water heaters.
  • Only applies to new equipment:
The rules affect newly manufactured gas furnaces and water heaters sold after January 1, 2026.
  • Some systems may cost more:
New equipment must meet higher efficiency or emissions standards, which can increase the cost of replacing older, lower-efficiency systems (like traditional 80% furnaces).
  • Current inventory can still be installed:
Equipment already in stock before the deadline can still be sold while supplies last.

Why the Change?

Colorado is aiming to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. Manufacturers are now required to produce equipment that meets ultra-low emissions or ENERGY STAR® efficiency standards.
